How to Maintain Healthy Carpet

Written by Caryn Calvetta

Did you know that having carpeting in your home actually keeps you healthier? According to studies, people who choose carpeting get sick four times less than people with other types of flooring.

Why? Well your carpet works as a kind of giant health filter that traps bacteria, dirt and dust mites. But that also means you have to take steps toward regularly cleaning your carpets.

Sure good vacuuming is a great everyday way to remove those health hazards from your home. But you should consider having your carpets professionally cleaned at least twice a year. Professionals can get your carpets 150 percent cleaner than the average home cleaners on the market. In fact, professional machines use extremely hot water that disinfects better than your average tap water.

Because we realize that protecting your carpet investment and maintaining a healthy home is of the highest priority (as it is for our family), we’ve launched our own professional cleaning service that offers high-quality service you can count on.

So as part of your spring cleaning, consider scheduling a professional to create better air quality and healthier home.

**Through April 15, clean one room and get the second one free, plus free Scotchguard. You'll also received a free bottle of spot remover. Price based on the larger of two rooms. Not valid with any other offer.**

nancyLiving in Cleveland, California, Washington D.C., Mississippi and Arizona, I know how important the place you call “home” is. It’s about having a space that not only looks good, but makes you feel comfortable and balanced. I am happy to be back at home in Cleveland and am energized by the opportunity to join Calvetta Bros. as their designer.

I’ve been working with floor coverings of all types since the early 80s. As a color consultant for the Sherwin-Williams Company, I helped coordinate carpeting, window treatments and fabric, along with the perfect colors for a variety of spaces.

This fall, I am excited to help Calvetta Bros. Floor Show customers select from a broad variety of floor coverings. I know how overwhelming it seems to coordinate hardwood, tile, backsplash design and area rugs with an adjacent floor, wall color and furniture. Let me help you understand which color families work well together, what hues complement each other and which neutrals offset certain colors!
Growing up in Chagrin Falls, OH, I was exposed to the traditional elements of the Western Reserve, however, my family moved to Washington D.C., Vicksburg, Miss. and Phoenix, AZ so I began my design journey exposed to a variety of architectural and historical references.

Working for the Color Studio at Sherwin-Williams, I traveled weekly throughout the US and had firsthand experience with our diverse cultures. After my decade with Sherwin-Williams, I was fortunate to work as a northern California-based architectural representative and then moved back to the east coast where I worked as an art consultant for the Rosenberg Group based in DC.

Today I am back home with my teenage boys, Weston and Nolan, and my 86-year-old father. After designing interiors for 13 years, with a focus on custom drapery, I decided to integrate that experience with the latest and greatest in the floor covering world.

Please stop in at our Bedford location – I’d love to meet you and discuss how we can help you create the perfect colors and patterns to enhance the environment in your home!
As a designer, Nancy Tienvieri of Calvetta Bros. believes it’s paramount to keep up with the ever changing technology and importance of green products which are emerging daily.

“For anyone who has not seen the bamboo and cork floors which are quickly gaining in popularity, I invite you to come in and see what's new with renewable resources,” she says.
While Nancy has vast experience in working with paint colors and staying current with color trends, she is surprised and intrigued by how important global influences are.

“I’ve been oogling hundreds of mosaic tile boards, each one different and cooler than the next,” she says. “This eclectic mix of colors and styles is what the 2011 color mix is all about. It evokes a sense of uniqueness and individualism, almost a trend toward not being trendy at all.”
Nancy adds that this is why there are simultaneous movements going on – a gentle palette emerging from the economically challenged decade we are experiencing. Hard times call for soft colors. The hues reflect a yearning for youthful innocence and gentler times. However, on the opposite end of the spectrum, the global influences range from the cynical realism art movement happening in China, to the carnival spirit of Rio de Janeiro, host of the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Coral will be the big deal in 2011, according to Nancy, and is being slated as the single most important color of the year, not only in home accents and consumer goods, but also apparel. Red-cast blues will be ascending and grays are becoming warmer and more brown.

Are you trying to sell your home in 2011? Nancy recommends taking the time to stage your home and select the best neutrals with all of their quirky undertones and accenting with some update splashes of color.

Nancy is available to assist with your home remodeling projects. She can be reached at 216.662.5550, or stop by the Bedford Calvetta Bros. location to meet her in person!

Before:

The old beige carpet in the before pictures of this Mayfield Village, Ohio home was a cheaper quality carpet.  Wear and tear on the step treads is a dead giveaway!  Take a close look at the spindles and you will notice the carpet is pulling up and it is extremely noticeable where the cuts were made at installation.  Additionally, the carpet was not properly secured around the steps and pulling away from the wood leaving an unfinished and sloppy look.

With new home construction declining, many homeowners are focused on remodeling instead. Along with considering traditional factors such as cost and design, homeowners embarking on a remodeling effort are taking the time to ensure their decisions to upgrade their home aren’t at the expense of the environment.

Enter bamboo and cork. Both highly sustainable and environmentally sound, bamboo and cork are becoming a popular choice as an alternative to hardwood flooring.

While bamboo may not immediately conjure up images of sleek and comfortable flooring underfoot, recent technological advances have allowed bamboo manufacturers to create a surface that is smooth, stylish and durable. Many customers like the exotic look that a bamboo floor provides. Installation is conducted the same way as with hardwood flooring and some manufacturers even offer long-term warranties.

Cork floors offer benefits such as resistance to abrasion and sound. A completely renewable resource harvested as bark from living cork trees, cork is naturally hypoallergenic and antimicrobial, making it an ideal floor surface for allergy sufferers.

Manufacturers of these products are doing their part to conserve the environment in the way they harvest the materials as well as limiting their stock to what has been ordered. This reduces waste and conserves our forests.

By choosing these strong and lasting hardwood alternatives, homeowners can enjoy their new floors for several years after their remodeling project is complete. Plus they can feel good about selling their home with eco-friendly, quality flooring that will stand out from the other homes for sale in their area.
